Farming and finance have always been part of Deb’s world, so launching Purvis AgriFinance felt like a natural progression shaped by years in agricultural finance and a deep understanding of regional clients. What made it challenging was starting without a client book and without a traditional banking background to lean on.
“I started from zero. Just passion and determination.”
That lived experience still shapes how she approaches every conversation. She is not simply reviewing balance sheets or serviceability figures. She understands seasonal pressure, succession planning and the weight of decisions that affect entire families. In agri-finance, a lending decision can influence generations.
“It isn’t about chasing deals. It’s about building relationships. My clients are often making decisions that affect generations.”
In the early days, having experienced brokers to call made a real difference. She was able to ask questions, test ideas and sharpen where she could add the most value in the agri space.
“When I first started, I leaned heavily on brokers within Connective who helped me understand the industry and refine my strengths in the agri space.”
Over time, that consistency built trust. In regional communities where reputation travels quickly, that trust matters more than volume. Today, her business is known for steady support and long-term relationships that clients rely on.
When Nikki launched Cherry Lending & Finance, she knew technical skill would only take her so far. Running a brokerage means the responsibility sits with you, and over time she realised how important it was to have other brokers around her who understood that pressure without needing it explained.
She’s part of a local broker group in Bayside Melbourne called the Queens, formed by a group of female brokers who wanted a space to connect and support each other.
“It just allows people to have other female brokers in the industry to talk to. The conversation can sometimes not even be about mortgage broking and it can be about so much more.”
Alongside that peer connection, the support she has through Connective has also played an important role in her growth. It means she is not building alone. When something feels complex or uncertain, she can pick up the phone and talk it through.
“Without a doubt, the support that Connective offers has allowed me to grow my business and be successful. Connective feels like an extension of my team. I can pick up the phone and sense check something when I need to.”
Having both that peer network and the support around her has given Nikki the confidence to keep growing, knowing she does not have to figure everything out on her own.
Deb and Nikki’s experiences show that strong brokerages are rarely built in isolation. Skill and determination matter, but so does having people around you who understand the work and the responsibility that comes with it.
When brokers share experiences, test ideas and back each other, businesses are stronger. Having the right people and support around you makes a real difference.
That is what our Women in Broking Empower Program is built around. Connection, support and space to grow.
